The arbor concept used by BVN architects in this project aims to tell the story of the Wonnarua, who were the indigenous stewards of the land on which the New Maitland Hospital was built. The design uses pieces of terracotta to create dynamic patterns with different tones, which is an allegory representing the culture of these people.

This representation was the result of a collaboration between the community, the local aboriginal artist Saretta Fielding, NSW Health Infrastructure, BVN Architecture, and Flexbrick, together with LOHAS Australia.
The pergola, being a distinctive landmark of the image of the building, protects pedestrians from the sunlight as they make their way to the main entrance. The result is an installation that has become a relevant piece of public art celebrating and welcoming its multicultural community.
