New Flexbrick® project in France at the Archachon MA.AT cultural center

  • Thanks to its versatility and adaptability, the Flexbrick® system lines the facades of this historical building, where a WWII bunker appeared.
  • Due to its location, the building is exposed to winds of more than 62 mph; thus, wind tests were performed with satisfactory results, hence obtaining the ATEx certificate by the CSTB.
  • The King Kong architecture studio has been in charge of designing and adapting this historical building into the new MA AT cultural center.

A new Flexbrick® project in France, in the tourist city of Arcachon to be more specific, was launched for the renovation and adaptation of a historical building into a modern cultural center, the MA.AT (Media Library, Arcachon Tourist Association), located near the station, whose surface area of about 42,000 sq ft will accommodate a tourist office, some cultural associations and the district house.

The King Kong architecture studio has been in charge of designing and adapting this historical building.

Thanks to its versatility and adaptability, the architects considered the Flexbrick® system to line the facades of the old bunker, which has allowed them to customize the project by choosing the pattern, color and shape of their design finish. 5025 sq ft of flexible ceramic panels in white K2 smt back color have been used for this project, thus providing the building with a modern look and design. Owing to the building’s Atlantic location, it is exposed to winds of more than 62 mph; thus, for the facade safety, wind tests were performed with satisfactory results, hence obtaining the ATEx certificate by the CSTB.

The Flexbrick® industrialized system gives projects an avant-garde plasticity and appearance, enabling professionals to customize them for an exclusive design that is easy to install and maintain. Moreover, the openwork composition of the patterns used contributes to the sustainability of the building by filtering incoming natural light and absorbing some of the sun’s heat.

Flexbrick ceramic material

This material was created by the architect Vicente Sarrablo, director of the Technical Department and Head of the Ceramics Department at the International University of Catalonia’s School of Architecture. Developed by two companies in the ceramic sector in Spain –Piera Ecocerámica and Cerámica Malpesa– Flexbrick is an industrially produced system based on flexible sheets with ceramic, metallic, glass, wood and other elements to create pavement, cladding and lightweight lamellar structures. The ceramic textile speeds up construction and opens up a new range of possibilities for architectural dry cladding systems. This system allows you to “dress” façades, roofs, open areas, etc. Architects can customise their design according to the needs of each project. Numerous architectural firms have used Flexbrick for their projects, including: Archikubik, Blur Arquitectura, Michèle&Miquel, Pich Architects, PMMT, Juan Trias de Bes –TDB Arquitectura and LG Arquitectos, ArchiKubik, Atelier Galante, just to name a few.
